SCHOOL PROGRAMS

New Voices: Playwriting in the Schools
Sponsored by The Sutherland Foundation and


Playwriting in the SchoolsNew Voices is a classroom residency for middle and high school students aimed at teaching the basics of playwriting. Students work with teaching artists for 8-10 sessions to create original 10-minute plays with an emphasis on writing rather than production. These original works focus on a wide array of subjects affecting teens, including bullying, body image, substance abuse, and often reflect their own experiences. New Voices serves hundreds of students annually, and has given rise to the Actors Theatre New Voices 10-Minute Play Contest, in conjunction with the Humana Festival of New American Plays.

New Voices: Monologue/Dialogue
This classroom residency is designed for elementary and middle schools, aligned with Kentucky Core Content requirements. Students work with teaching artists for 3-5 sessions to create original monologues and short scenes. These pieces are eligible for the junior division of the New Voices Play Contest.

Fee: $350 (aid available)


Actors in the Classroom
Pre-show Workshop
Actors Theatre will send a professional teaching artist to your classroom for a one-hour workshop that prepares students for the student matinee performance. The workshop gives insight into the historical and social climate, interactively explores the themes, and connects a contemporary young audience to the play.

Offered free as part of the Student Matinee Series package

Young Critics Post-Show Workshops
Teachings artists visit your classroom to give students the inside scoop on how to write a theatrical critique! In this one-hour workshop, students actively engage the KY Core Content Elements of Drama, creating connections between the audience and artistic experience.

Offered free as a post-show workshop with the Student Matinee Series package or independently for $75 per class

Students who have written a critique on an Actors Theatre production may submit their work to be posted on our website! To submit online, please send all critiques as email attachments to Education@ActorsTheatre.org with the subject heading ‘Young Critics Contest.’ Please be sure to include your name, school, teacher, grade and contact information.


Peace by Piece
This exciting new program for youth centers and schools is a drama-based approach to conflict resolution and peace education. Through an explorative process of creative drama, improvisation and playwriting, young people can better connect their inner life to outward action, leading to a greater sense of wholeness and wellbeing. By responding creatively, young people can imagine real-world implications of expressed ideas of justice and compassion for themselves and the communities to which they belong. Peace by Piece is a 10-16 hour classroom residency.

Design-Your-Own-Workshop
Teachers may choose from a variety of content areas to create custom classroom workshops specifically designed for the needs of their students. Each workshop involves interactive activities and discussion led by one of our teaching artists.

Choose from one or more: Drama Core Content 101, Be an Actor, Be a Director, Be a Designer, Be a Playwright.

Available for K-12. Fee: $75 per hour


COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
YOUTHEATRE
The Youtheatre program provides community groups and service organizations with vouchers to select plays of the season, which typically includes those in the Student Matinee Series. In addition, participants receive study guides and a pre-show workshop from Actors Theatre teaching artists.

To participate, appply through the Education Department.



Community Youth Team (Service Learning Project)
High school students act as volunteer ushers, one Wednesday or Saturday a month. The program helps students obtain their 30 Service Learning Project hours required for graduation. If you are interested in participating, email your name, home phone and address to AHammons@ActorsTheatre.org. You must be at least 15 years old to apply.


TOURS AND OTHER PROGRAMS Job Shadowing
Actors Theatre provides students interested in theatre careers a chance to shadow a theatre professional. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the theatre.
