Experience Our Plays. Create New Works.

After this experience, I felt like I understood myself better as a writer. The discussions
I had with my dramaturg and director showed me that there is a purpose
for every character, action and line of dialogue, whether I realize it at first or not,
and they helped me realize that purpose. Thanks to their help, I feel I can better
assess my own writing and writing skills next time I put pen to paper. Also, seeing
my characters come to life was AMAZING!!! Best thing ever. Words cannot describe
the feeling of sitting in a sold out theatre seeing the live reactions of the audience
    to your ‘baby’.

What is a New Voices residency?

Aimed at teaching the basics of playwriting, New Voices is a classroom residency program guiding middle and high school students through the process of writing a ten-minute play. In the 2008-2009 school year, 450 students participated in eighteen residencies throughout fifteen schools. Our annual New Voices Young Playwrights Contest is open to ten-minute plays written in our residency program as well as those written independently. Winning plays are developed and fully produced in an evening of world premieres performed on stage at Actors Theatre by members of the Acting Apprentice Company. These plays are then published in our annual New Voices Anthology of student-written work.

These programs are designed to help students make sense of and communicate ideas of drama/theatre as well as reinforce other school curriculum. Recent studies have shown direct correlation between arts education and gains in reading, self-concept, motivation and empathy for others.
