		CASTING Actors Theatre of Louisville employs actors under the LORT (League of Regional Theatres) contract with Actors' Equity Association, the union for professional actors and stage managers. The union determines the number of non-Equity actors in any production. The priority in casting non-union roles is always with the Actors Theatre Apprentice Company because of the tremendous contribution of time and effort they give without compensation throughout an entire season. We always look for opportunities to cast local actors in our productions. There are opportunities every year for local casting. Actors Theatre holds auditions for local non equity performers twice a year. Usually in the spring and late summer. We post ALL audition opportunities on this webpage, as soon as they are scheduled. We send all audition notices to the Courier-Journal, LEO and Velocity newspapers. These auditions are a chance for our casting department to meet local performers and may not lead to specific casting. I am an Equity actor living in the Louisville area, how I find out about auditions? Actors Theatre holds local auditions for equity performers twice a year, as stipulated in our Equity agreement. We post all audition notices on this webpage as soon as they are scheduled. We also post on the Actors Equity Casting Call page. My child is very interested in performing; does Actors Theatre ever cast children? We cast several children every year in our annual productions of Dracula and A Christmas Carol. In addition there may be other opportunities for child casting in our season. When do you hold auditions for Children and Young Adults? We hold annual children and young adult auditions once a year, usually in late August/early September. Children and Young Adult auditions are posted on this webpage and we also post in LEO, Courier-Journal and Velocity. What are you looking for at the Children’s auditions? We look for many things. In general we look for children who are smart, confident, poised, independent, well behaved and can be without their parents in the room. Imagination and a sense of play are also extremely important. Height and age are important for specific roles. Do you hold auditions for Equity actors in other cities? We hold open auditions for Equity actors in other cities at least twice a year. Normally we hold open auditions in New York, and occasionally Chicago. These are posted on the Actors Equity Casting Call page and on this webpage. Appointments are scheduled the day of by our Equity monitor and we cannot reserve anyone a time in advance. In addition we also hold Equity auditions for specific productions in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles depending on the needs of the production. Auditions are arranged through agent submissions and scheduled by a casting director in that city. How do I schedule an audition? For all auditions held at Actors Theatre: We begin taking audition appointments ONE MONTH prior to the audition date. No auditions will be scheduled before that time. We schedule auditions until all the time slots are filled. In an effort to respect your time and ours, we WILL NOT see anyone without an appointment on the day of the auditions. Once we have scheduled your audition, we will send information regarding the location of the audition and what you should prepare. Auditions in other cities: are scheduled either through a casting director via agent submission for specific project or through an Equity Audition Monitor the day of the audition for our open Equity auditions. What should I expect at the audition? Auditions at Actors Theatre are as relaxed and painless as possible! Performers arrive at least 10 minutes before your audition in order to sign in and fill out an audition form. A member of our casting department runs the auditions and will call your name at your assigned time. Actors audition one at a time with only members of the casting department in the room. You will be asked to perform your monologue or other prepared material. We plan for each audition to last 5 minutes so that we can see as many people as possible during the day. Parents wait in the audition lounge during their children’s auditions and do not go into the audition with the child. How will I know if I am cast? Because of time constraints we cannot call everyone who attends an open audition. We will ONLY contact if you we need to see you for a callback audition or to offer you a role. Please do not call us for the status of your audition. Where and to whom should I send my headshot and resume? We are always interested in working with new performers. We encourage actors to send us their picture and resume along with a cover letter introducing themselves and their particular theatre interests. If you do not have a headshot use a photo or snapshot. Do you have a casting director in New York that I should send my headshot and resume to? Because of the number of plays we produce each season, we use a number of casting directors. We recommend sending us your materials at the above address instead. Do you ever cast on the West Coast? Because of budget constraints, we rarely cast on the West Coast. If you are an actor living on the West Coast, the best idea is to send us your picture and resume (at the above address) and let us know what projects you are interested in. What is the Actors Equity Association? How do I join? Actors' Equity Association ("AEA" or "Equity"), founded in 1913, is the labor union that represents more than 45,000 Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions and provides a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans, for its members. Actors' Equity is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. I want to become an actor but I’ve don’t have much experience. What do I do? First, see as much theatre as you can and just keep reading plays! It’s a great way to understand the kind of plays you want to do and what kind of acting you like. Second, take a class. Even the best and most accomplished performers still take classes to keep sharp. Third, audition, audition, audition! Many people say the hardest part of acting is auditioning. The more you audition the more comfortable you will become and the easier the process will be. Does Actors Theatre hold acting classes? Actors Theatre is committed to training the next generation of theatre leaders and artists through our Apprentice/Intern Company. More Information about the Apprentice/Intern Company FOR ADULTS Our Associate Director, Zan Sawyer-Dailey holds private acting classes and workshops for adults (19 and older) in the spring of each year.
